My aim as a maths tutor is to guide, inspire and empower my students to achieve their full potential. I will endeavour to provide them with the skills and tools they need to be continually improving their subject knowledge. Through the setting of achievable targets and challenges they will be motivated and excited to learn more, I believe that learning maths should be rewarding and fun.
I am passionate about learning and have a positive attitude to maths, and life in general, so I hope my energy will inspire students to excel. Everyone learns differently and has different strengths and weaknesses, this personal approach to learning maths enables students to form strong bonds with me as their math tutor and so develop trust. By providing a safe, nurturing environment students are prepared to take more risks without being worried about feeling a sense of failure. The result is that great gains are made with their learning and they have a desire to try harder going forward.
I believe in providing a consistent approach to learning, plenty of repetition of the required skills as well as explaining things in a way students can relate to will lead to success and them reaching their mathematical goals. I feel it is important to always give direct, honest feedback to both parents and students so we are all clear about our targets and the work to be done to achieve them. When these milestones are reached I feel that celebrating them is an important part of learning as it rewards the hard work that both the student and their family have put in to get there.
Prior to setting up Maths Coaching Wanaka I was the owner and teacher at Kip McGrath Wanaka. Along with my talented staff, we ran a successful tutoring business which provided maths, english and science to students Y 1- 13. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to help so many students over the 16 years I have been teaching in Wanaka. I am now taking the opportunity to specialise in what I teach and focus on my personal strength as an educator which is Y2-11 maths. I trained as a teacher over 20 years ago, teaching maths has been and will continue to be, a very rewarding job for me and I look forward to being a part of your mathematical journey.
